Loupe is born.

Flexographic press

My father is a printer. I remember him coming from work in an ink-stained shirt, jeans, and boots. Every once and a while he would bring a sample of what he printed that day. Most of the time it would be labels for a certain canned product or, later, a beer label. Every time he would show me the sample he would reach into his pocket and pull out this small, square leather pouch. He would reach two fingers in and slowly pull out his black metal loupe. He would turn on a side lamp in the living room and place the loop over the sample. It was during this times with my father where he would teach me about color and registration.

Loupes mean a lot to me because it is through that tiny viewfinder where you see what makes colors come together. You can see what happens when a press is out of register and needs to be aligned. You see dot after dot after dot of CMYK. You learn that it’s the smallest things that matter in design. That is something small is overlooked, the whole piece comes out wrong.

Loupe will be a showcase of those little things. Those instances where everything comes together and the design shines. Here’s to unique and wonderful design. And to my dad who started me on my design journey.
